‘Two become One’
The owners of this family home on Gayville road in Battersea wanted to increase their square footage they contacted Plus Rooms were at hand to help.
WHO LIVES HERE?
The property is home to Battersea residents James and Kerry Lindsay.
TELL US ABOUT THE PROPERTY?
It’s a Victorian property situated in Battersea, specifically in the area known as ‘Between the commons’.
WHEN DID YOU MOVE INTO THE PROPERTY?
We moved in, in April 2011.
WHAT APPEALED TO YOU ABOUT THE PROPERTY?
It was in a very desirable area with great shops, bars, restaurants etc. We loved the original Victorian features of the building, there was room to extend into the loft and the side return, and the garden faces south and therefore is a sun trap.
WHAT CHANGES HAVE YOU MADE, STRUCTURAL OR COSMETIC, TO THE PROPERTY?
We’ve made both structural and cosmetic changes – we renovated two flats back to a house, converted the loft, did the side return and rear extension, and gave it a full cosmetic makeover.
We took inspiration from hundreds of home magazines, and from other properties we have viewed in the area
HOW LONG DID IT TAKE?
Plus Rooms got to work and the renovation took five months in total.
DID YOU ENCOUNTER ANY SURPRISES OR PROBLEMS DURING THE RENOVATION?
No, nothing went wrong along the way. In fact, the only surprise was that we were actually able to have more height space in the living room/kitchen than we had originally thought.
DID YOU LIVE IN THE PROPERTY DURING THE WORKS?
The property was two flats when we bought it so we were able to live in the downstairs flat whilst the loft conversion took place and this helped to keep the costs low. However, we had to move out for six-seven weeks when the work started on the downstairs flat. We found a short rental flat very close by, which was handy so that we could continue to meet with Plus Rooms regularly.
IT’S A VERY STYLISH HOME. TELL US ABOUT THE DESIGN…
The actual layout of the house is similar to other Victorian properties in the area. We wanted to maintain the original Victorian feel – but adding in modern touches, such as the bi-folding doors from the kitchen through to the garden.
WHERE DID YOU SEEK YOUR INTERIOR INSPIRATION?
We took inspiration from hundreds of home magazines, and from other properties we had viewed in the area. Plus Rooms also showed us numerous examples of extensions and conversion on similar properties in the area, as well as 3D visuals. We also had help from Laura Ashley home design, and the staff at Farrow & Ball were particularly helpful when choosing a colour palette that worked for us.
DID YOU SOURCE ANY OF YOUR HOME BUYS LOCALLY?
We used a South London firm called Puccini Kitchens. We sourced the tiles throughout from Solis Tiles and we picked up furniture from various home exhibitions. We had our kitchen table made to measure from a place on Wandsworth Bridge Road, and the stools under the island in the kitchen were a great find from an antique shop in Buckinghamshire. Smaller items have been picked up on the way from various stores on the Northcote Road, and we are constantly on the lookout for items that will add to the feel of the house, without cluttering the place up!
WHAT WAS IT LIKE TO WORK WITH PLUS ROOMS?
They were very professional and friendly. They worked hard and quickly to make the renovation as convenient as it could be.
WOULD YOU RECOMMEND PLUS ROOMS TO A FRIEND?
Yes, I have already and would do so again. The quality of the finishing is excellent. Anyone who comes into the house asks who did the work and we are happy to recommend Plus Rooms.
