Why consider extending out, when you can extend up? Many homeowners prefer the idea of a loft conversion as it can be done without planning permission (depending on the size and design) and is a way to create more space without taking it from your garden.

Even better? With the right design you can create a beautiful space that adds a whole other aspect to your home, creating a serene haven among the rooftops for a variety of uses.

As London’s leading design and build company, we work with each of our clients to help design their ideal loft conversion. We advise on what permissions are needed and create bespoke designs that represent our client’s chosen style and practical requirements. Here are some of our favourite loft conversion design ideas.

Contemporary design

Clean lines, neutral colours and the use of texture can create a soothing, contemporary hideaway for your loft conversion. It is a sophisticated look without being overwhelming and keeping things fresh.

For this gorgeous family home in Ealing, we concentrated as much on the interior as the exterior finish to create this large dormer extension. In total, two double bedrooms and a bathroom were added to the home under a combination of permitted development and planning permission.

Glass panelling in the walls make the most of dazzling rooftop views, giving the space a real ‘wow’ factor and meaning we could keep the interior design sleek and minimal. We also raised the ridgeline and lowered the ceiling on the first floor to maximise the internal head height, and used hidden guttering and aluminium trims to create that perfect streamlined finish.

Lighting

Natural light is considered the number one feature that people look for when buying a house. It’s a free source of warmth, vibrancy and feel-good energy, inviting in brightness and giving the appearance of more space. When it comes to loft conversions, there are many ways we can bring in more natural light.

For this home in Herne Hill, we used grand glass panels to frame perfect rooftop views and invite the outside in. The striking angles of the window panels creates a fresh, modern look, while skylights flood the space with even more light. With this unique design, carefully tucked at the top of a Victorian building, we managed to create a double bedroom, spa-like bathroom and a walk-in wardrobe.

Colours

A valuable way to give a sense of space in your loft conversion is through the use of light, neutral colours. They provide a sense of warmth blended with a clean, fresh feel. If you’d like to make a statement, you can layer over bold pops of colour for an invigorating, modern look.

We converted this Richmond bungalow into a family home using warm, gentle colours such as mocha, light grey and taupe to expand the space in the loft conversion and create a clean, elegant finish.

This family in East Dulwich wanted a dynamic design for an en suite guest bedroom. Thanks to the sharp-angled windows, skylights and the slate bathroom (which together created a clean modern feel), we were able to add in a shock of burnt orange through furnishings and textiles, resulting in a vibrant space that isn’t overwhelming.

Outside space

If you’re converting your loft, why not go one step further to maximising the space by adding a balcony or terrace to your extension plan?

This family in Shepherds Bush opted for a dormer loft extension complete with a terrace. The extension utterly transformed their two-bedroom apartment into a spacious, modern penthouse, making room for a living, kitchen and dining space as well as three additional bathrooms. The large terrace area is fantastic for hosting, linking the inside with the outside and offering stunning views.

Stairs

Instead of thinking of stairs as a mere necessity, consider them an accent feature of your conversion. You can explore your creativity with a whole variety of design concepts that can add style and sophistication to your home.

In particular, for this project in Chiswick, we used light wood paired with glass features to create a greater sense of space and light. We combined an elegant, stylish touch with a modern, simplistic appeal to create this classy finish.
