Side extensions are a simple and practical way of adding more space and light to your home without taking up too much of your garden. Instead, your ground floor would be extended out to the side, taking up that small amount of alleyway space that is rarely used to its fullest potential.

Once created, this space is yours to make your own. It may be that you want to create a lively space for dining and entertaining, or perhaps a warm and comforting family room where everyone can feel at ease. In this article, we’ll be delving into some of the practical considerations involved in a side extension, not to mention some standout extension projects that have been designed and built by the Plus Rooms team.

What to consider when planning a side extension

  • Planning permission – Your project manager will be able to guide you through the side house extension planning permission process. Generally speaking, you will not usually need planning permission for a single-storey side extension that is up to 4m in height and no wider than half the width of the home. Keep in mind that this process may be more complex if your home is listed, if the side extension is especially large or tall (for example, if it increases the overall height of the building or covers more than half the area of land around your home), if you are in a Conservation Area, or if you are extending towards a road.
  • Single or double-storey extensions – Single-storey extensions are one of the most popular options for good reasons. They are relatively quick and uncomplicated to design and build, and they are very effective for turning a small kitchen and living area into a generous open plan design. Two storey side extensions are possible too, and although they are more expensive to build, they can effectively improve the square meterage of the home, adding on space for a family bathroom or nursery upstairs in addition to the downstairs living space.
  • Light and views – When extending out to the side of your building you’ll want to make sure there is even light distribution, especially if your extension brings your home closer to a neighbouring property or perhaps a tall fence. Fortunately, elements such as skylights or bi-folding doors can keep things light, inviting and airy whilst also expanding your outdoor view.

Side extension ideas to inspire your family home

Side extension in Brightwell Crescent London

Brightwell Crescent

This side extension is a fantastic marriage of style and functionality. Our team was able to create a dual kitchen and living area, with enough space left over for a WC and additional storage. While there is certainly no shortage of colour, we turned the dial down ever so slightly so that all the different shades blend well as a whole. With wide triple doors and three skylights, the space is flooded with light during the warmer months.

Side extension in Fiern Road London

Friern Road

This broken plan extension combines several distinct functional areas so you can get the most out of open-plan living, while still having a dedicated space for work or hobbies. Children can have their own space to play, but you’ll still be able to keep your eye on them. This space is certainly unique in terms of shape, and we installed a large fixed glass wall so that every area gets its fair share of natural light while making the overall space seem taller.

Side extension in Albert Road London

Albert Road

This house’s rear and side extension is a great example of how an extension can transform the entire ground floor configuration of a property, making it ideal for a busy and active family. With a distinctive contemporary feel, this renovation creates a large living, kitchen and dining space that opens the home onto the garden. With a flat roof, industrial glazed French doors, and frameless skylights, the space has a real sense of character and openness.
