Side returns are frequently seen in Victorian and Edwardian homes. While these types of properties certainly have their benefits (common features include high ceilings and bay windows) they often include a narrow strip of outdoor space that many struggle to find a purpose for.

Therefore, you may think that an extension is a practical and stylish solution worth investing in.

With a side return kitchen extension, you can maximise space and use natural lighting to its full advantage. It can also add a fresh look to a period home – be it with a skylight or bifold doors. Alternatively, you may want to retain your home’s traditional style, and simply increase the amount of functional space.

If you were to work with a leading design build and company like Plus Rooms, who pride themselves on their quality bespoke craftsmanship, there would be more possibilities than you can imagine.

Side kitchen extension ideas

We’ve worked with many clients to design and build their ideal side return extension, maintaining the same exacting standards of quality throughout from start to finish. Take a look at some of our standout designs below.

A stylish urban garden

Inspired by the eclectic greenery in the garden of this East Dulwich home, we decided to install continuous flooring to bring the outside in. In terms of key features, we opted for a dark colour palette. This added a modern flair, with a blend of warm textures to help ensure balance in the overall feel of the interior.

A relaxing family kitchen diner

Simplicity was key to transforming this pitched roof extension in Lambeth. Rather than relying on extraneous design features, we focused on blending the indoors with the outdoors and using premium materials in calming neutral shades. This resulted in a laid-back multi-purpose space that’s perfect for the entire family.

A luxurious and inviting multi-purpose space

The owners of this East Dulwich home wanted to create something bright and spacious, with pops of colour to add a touch of vibrance. Large doors and contemporary-style skylights bring in as much light as possible whilst also connecting the indoors with the outdoors. Finally, the Shaker-style kitchen was finished in a warm yet serene blue, to help create a relaxing space.

A chic, industrial interior

One client, based in Camberwell opted for a design that incorporated industrial elements with a connection to nature outside. Exposed brick and steel beams lend a modern element, while large skylights and a glass valley maintain a seamless connection with the verdant outdoor space.
